L-arginine

L-arginine is an essential amino acid and one of the eight essential ones, especially during the growing years.

L-arginine affects the body has always benefited our body in many positive ways. And for a long time, nobody could explain arginine diversity, but in 1988 it was discovered that this amino acid is a precursor to nitric oxide (NO).

L-arginine and its effects

There are many positive effects and one of them is that L- Arginine increases nitric oxide production! Nitric oxide is a gas molecule that acts as chemical messenger in several functions in the body.

Nitric oxide (NO):

Also used by the immune system to kill invading bacteria and cancer cells. It protects the endothelial cells of blood vessel wall of plaque formation in that it is a strong antioxidant.

It also prevents free radical attack on the vessel walls and in LDL-cholesterol.

Damaged vessel walls, in combination with damaged cholesterol, form plaques and eventually lead to blood clots in our blood vessels.

This smooth muscle then relaxes and the tissue (corpora cavernosa) to fill with blood, resulting in an erection in penises, or increases sensitivities to female genitals.

There are many important functions of the nervous system which inter alia counteracts the effects of severe stress and trauma, governing the release of important hormones, acts as a neurotransmitter (messenger) in the brain and improves learning, memory and coordination skills.

  • After hard muscular workout and training, it helps increase their muscle mass and relieves the muscle aches and cramps.
  • It helps to dilate blood vessels in the exercising muscle to allow for increased transport of nutrients into the muscle. The dilated blood vessels and increased nitric oxide production have also “muscle pump effect”.
  • L-arginine is essential for the production of various substances needed for muscle energy production. It then helps to flush away waste products lactic acid and ammonia.
  • L-arginine is also involved in transport and storage of nitrogen in the muscle tissue.

The immune system:

  • L-arginine can protect against shrinkage of the thymus, immunological important gland.
  • L-arginine also stimulates the activity of T-lymphocytes.

Weight loss:

  • Studies also suggest that L-arginine may increase the production and secretion of insulin and growth hormone, GH (the individual needs can vary greatly). L-arginine, therefore, increases burning of fat and blood sugar.
  • An increase of the L-arginine leads to the depletion of brain lysinreserver (a different amino acid).
  • Lysine level in the brain decreases when you eat and are effective in reducing the craving for food. For many people, this is a good support to achieve weight loss without psychiatric symptoms such as depression or anxiety.

The liver:

  • Ammonia, a standard toxic substance derived from spoilage bacteria in the gut, converted into urea in the liver by means of L-arginine.
  • Studies show that supplementation of L-arginine increases collagen synthesis (hewing of collagen and elastin) and accelerates the healing time of surgical wounds.
  • L-arginine is required for the production of hemoglobin, which accounts for the transport of oxygen in the blood.

Foods that are rich in L-arginine:

  • Pork, venison, turkey, eggs and milk are rich in L-arginine, but also ginseng, garlic, nuts, carob, cabbage, soy sauce, raisins, seeds, cheese and cottage cheese contain L-arginine.

The dosage of L-arginine:

A typical therapeutic dose is 2-6g. The intake should be divided so that the largest dose (e.g. 2-4g) taken at bedtime, which favors the production of growth hormone during the night.

The intake should NOT exceed 20 grams per day and when taken over 10g, the dosage should be continued with the addition of L-lysine.

L-arginine is best absorbed on an empty stomach. If your stomach gets upset by this, you can try to eat some carbohydrates. The protein should be avoided, together with L-Arginine, since absorption can be worse then.

Contraindications of L-arginine:

Supplements of L-arginine should not be used in schizophrenia, pregnancy, and lactation. Patients with Herpes Simplex Type I and II should preferably avoid supplements of L-arginine and instead take supplements of L-lysine.

 L-Arginine and Breast Growth

It is believed that L-arginine and L-ornithine promote natural growth hormone (GH) release from the pituitary gland, which helps maintain healthy protein synthesis within cells. As the result, breast tissue growth can be achieved more easily.

Although there has been no solid scientific evidence to support this, many people have reported its efficacy in helping them achieve fuller cup sizes.
